For many years I played in Heavy Metal bands. I determined my own self worth by how many people would be at a show. I craved the attention of people praising me, and telling me that I was a good vocalist. I would especially love to hear phrases like “you’re the best vocalist in Buffalo” or “you’re the best singer I’ve ever heard.” Although that is highly debatable I still would eat it up and get a temporary sense of satisfaction from it. I constantly craved the attention of women hoping they would notice me if I sang to them. Then I’d add high doses of alcohol to complete the illusion of “feeling good about myself.”
Usually the very next day I’d feel empty inside all over again. So I’d pursue these ‘moments’ every chance I got in order to feel this way. I turned to women, alcohol, more shows, and for a while thought this the key to happiness. But the more I pursued this lifestyle the more empty, and lonely I’d feel at the end of the day.
I was watching the Ellen show and they had a story about a teacher, and her students. Ellen surprised the students and brought the teacher on her show which was very nice. This isn’t what was troubling rather what the teacher said that made me take notice. In so many words she explained that her students because they were on the Ellen show, feel better about themselves. Because of the Ellen show they can now say “I matter, I’m important, because I was on the Ellen show.”
This is what the world wants us to believe. The lie that our value is based on how famous we are, how many likes we have on facebook, how much money we have, and our overall status in life. Once that attention is turned away from us, then we are no longer of value.
I believed this lie at one time which is exactly why at the end of the day I’d feel empty, and worthless.
You do Matter
I’m here to tell you don’t believe this lie, and that you do matter. You can fill this empty void in your life by putting your faith and trust in Christ.
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. ~ Matthew 11:28-30”
Once you come to know Christ all that emptiness will wash away. What does this mean? Knowing Christ?
“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. 22 Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ 23 And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness! ~ Matthew 7:21-23“
When Jesus says “I never knew you” he does not mean he doesn’t know who you are. After all he created you!
You can stand before Him and say but I went to Church, donated to charity, went to confession, prayed to the saints. I was a good person Lord! But if you never entered into a personal relationship with Christ then these works wont mean anything.
“For all of us have become like one who is unclean, And all our righteous deeds are like a filthy garment; And all of us wither like a leaf, And our iniquities, like the wind, take us away. ~ Isaiah 64:6“
You must put your faith and trust in Jesus.
Don’t believe the lie! You do matter, and you’re not alone! None of the lies the world throws at you can identify who you are when you become a child of God. You can have total completeness in Christ, a love that never perishes. All you have to do is reach out and say yes.
