“The Dirt”

I watched this movie “The Dirt” which is the story of the metal band Motley Crue from the 1980’s. As a kid I looked up to rock stars. I saw their fame, money, the beautiful women that would throw themselves at them and that entire lifestyle I equated to true happiness. I wanted that more than anything.

But What did I really want? What do we all want? To be loved and accepted. So I figured the more people that liked me, the more I’d be loved and accepted. The more girls that wanted to be with me, the more loved and accepted I’d be. The more people that heard my band, the more loved I’d be. If I did whatever my heart desired the more ‘happy’ I’d be.

But the truth is that without Christ we only self destruct, desperately seeking to fill a void with all the wrong the things. Jesus said apart from me, you can do nothing. John 15:5

Apart from God we do exactly that. We indulge in lusts of the flesh, we lie, cheat, steal, hate our neighbors, our enemies, blaspheme His name with our lips, we seek our own justice according to our will, we pursue worldly things (wealth), we poison our bodies with drugs, and alcohol and/or excessive eating. We seek after our own self righteousness and vanity; we seek after other gods, we worship people, and created things rather than the creator.

Romans 8:6-7 6 The mind of the flesh is death, but the mind of the Spirit is life and peace, 7 because the mind of the flesh is hostile to God: It does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so

The Bible teaches us in Jer 17:5-6 “Cursed is the man who trust in mankind, and makes flesh his strength” and in 17:9 our hearts are “deceitful above all things and beyond cure—who can understand it?”

The rock star in the movie overdosed on heroin and died later and was revived on the way to the hospital. He ended up immediately going and shooting heroin again. The singer in the band killed his friend when he went out driving while intoxicated. When our lives are governed by our flesh the only thing we can do is continue on the path that leads to death.

The band did get sober after and honestly I don’t know where they are today. It is my prayer that if they haven’t come to saving faith in Jesus Christ that God may grant them repentance so that they too may come to a knowledge of the truth.

I don’t know why God chose to reveal Himself to me, and show me the mercy and grace He has shown to me. But I do know this. Although undeserving and wretched man that I am; He loved and accepted me before I loved Him, and that while I was yet a sinner He gave His life for me. Jesus says He who hears my Word and believes has eternal life.

There is nothing more fulfilling than this beautiful truth.
